LINWOOD, NEW JERSEY (November 29, 2017) – The Board of Directors of Linwood Country Club is pleased to announce plans to sell the 97-year old club to the Dougherty family, the owners and operators of three well-known Atlantic City restaurants.  The private club, originally opened in 1920, has been owned directly by its members since the 1940’s.  Brothers Frank and Joe Dougherty fourth-generation owners of the landmark Dock’s Oyster House, which their great grandfather opened in 1897, are no strangers to century-old buildings or businesses.  The family also owns and operates the iconic Knife & Fork Inn, originally opened in 1912, as well as Harry’s Oyster Bar, which is located at Bally’s in what was once the Dennis Hotel.  David Gardner, Board President, says the Board chose the Doughertys because of their highly successful experience in the restaurant industry, respect for the history and traditions of the club, and clear vision for the club’s future.  This will be the family’s first off-shore venture.

“The goal of the Board of Directors has always been to elevate Linwood County Club to be the most spectacular golf club and event facility in the area,” said Gardner. “We are very excited about the Dougherty’s plans for the property and look forward to working together to write the next chapter for this historic club.”

The Dougherty’s lead a small group of investors who are purchasing the well-maintained club and planning improvements to the grounds and clubhouse. The group intends to keep the course private but will likely change the membership structure to attract new golf and social members.

“Linwood Country Club has the potential to be the premier private golf club in the area,” said Frank Dougherty, an avid golfer himself. “The club already offers a first-rate golf course with spectacular views of the Atlantic City skyline. Real opportunity for change, however, exists within the food and beverage program, which is our specialty.”

Along with revamping the club’s food and beverage options, the future owners’ plans include renovating the banquet room, creating a bridal suite, adding a bar to the outdoor patio and other physical improvements. Dougherty says the main goal is to build upon the club’s current assets and take it to the next level.

“We are locals with strong ties to the community and a vested interest in seeing Linwood Country Club succeed,” said Dougherty. “Our vision is to enhance the experience for existing members, attract new members and provide unparalleled event space to make Linwood Country Club the top event destination in the area.”

The sale is expected to be completed before the end of the year.  "
